On May 16, 2010, the Bay Area united to host its first Joy Prom. This community-sponsored event was a full-scale, first-class prom for people with special needs. Through volunteers, donations and corporate sponsorships, these often-overlooked individuals had a night to SHINE.
That night, 130 special needs guests (ages 13 through 85) enjoyed a free prom and were treated like kings and queens. At Joy Prom, each guest…
was paired with an escort for the evening (a trained volunteer)
was given a corsage or boutonnière and sipped on sparkling cider
had their make-up and hair touched up (ladies); or shoes shined (gentlemen)
had formal prom portraits taken against a spectacular backdrop
rode around town in a stretch limousine and arrived in style at the Red Carpet entrance
received a royal welcome and were formally introduced to the crowd
proceeded down the walk of fame, surrounded by paparazzi and fans
enjoyed a full dinner buffet and dessert bar
danced the night away to a DJ and a live band
received a gift bag, full portrait package and made memories that will last a lifetime
